Calling All Moms

October 26th, 2007

I need an opinion. Or forty opinions.

What do we think about feeding fish (like tuna or fish sticks) to babies?

I’ve looked online and get conflicting information. Too much mercury? Good source of fat and protein?  I don’t really want Bridget to subsist on a diet of chicken nuggets or fish sticks and macaroni and cheese, but I am running out of ideas. With fish sticks, I can always pull out the fish and throw away the breading. Or I can feed her tuna if she’d eat it. I just don’t know.

What do you/have you guys done?

she’d have to eat 45 boxes of fish sticks to have mercury issues.

kids like ‘em, and when you’re dealing with children, it’s best just to feed them whatever the heck they’ll eat, because that’s usually only 3 things.

I wish Mia would eat fish or fish sticks. I agree with b. that she would have to eat a crazy amount of fish before the mercury became a problem. Also, it’s really only an issue with larger fish like salmon and tuna, so if she’ll eat fish and you are worried, just give her something lower on the food chain.

We didn’t ever try fishsticks until he was two or three, just b/c I can’t handle them (the caregiver actually introduced them).

Have you tried scrambled eggs? Good source of all the stuff that will make her grow up and turn into a teen-age smart ass.

What about like, pork or something? I usually will puree (I know she’s past that) our leftovers in with veggies. Or lean hamburger? That crumbles pretty well for little fingers. Also, I’ve taken to mixing in chicken or beef in with mac and cheese. I love my mac and cheese, but it tastes better with added protein. Maybe making an extra piece of chicken you can cut up or whatever you’re making for dinner. I’m trying really really hard to avoid chicken fingers and fish sticks. He eats just about anything now, and I know he’ll hit a picky stage, but I’m hoping that his extremely varied diet will help him to eat what we’re eating.

I’m sure he’ll be begging for fish sticks and chicken nuggets.

I’d ask the pediatrician what he thinks at her 12-month appt next month, but from what I’ve heard, like the others above, there is no way she’d eat enough to poison herself. I’m so dumb - it never dawned on me to even try fish sticks. Hmmm. I’m sure Peanut won’t eat them but at least it’s something new to try. I am SO out of ideas.
