Only 57 Shopping Days Left

October 27th, 2007

That’s right, Christmas is less than two months away.  And I am so freaking Christmas-y already, I can’t even stand myself.

I made two loaves of banana bread yesterday. Tomorrow, I am hoping to try out Swistle’s chocolate-crusted pumpkin cheesecake recipe.  And today, I ordered my first Christmas presents and my Christmas tree from L.L. Bean. (As an aside, I just discovered that there is an L.L. Bean store in South Windsor, CT. I’m hoping that someone can confirm for me that this store was not there when I lived there for two years or else I’m going to be really pissed at myself.)

I know it sounds nuts-0 to buy a Christmas tree online, but stick with me here and I’ll walk you through my logic.  First, I’m pretty sure that all trees get cut on the same day. So even if I bought one here on December 15, the odds are good that it was cut the same damn day as the one that L.L. Bean is shipping to me for practically the same price I would pay some carnie-type person in an RV in the Albertson’s parking lot, and they aren’t even charging me shipping. You can bet the carnies charge you for rope and to bale the thing. Second, we’ve had such bad luck with Christmas trees for so long that I just can’t bear the thought of another fugly tree. So much so that I seriously considered buying an artificial tree to avoid the cussing and hand-wringing when, after a week in the stand, we discover that the damn tree is not taking any of the water we have provided. But I can’t stomach the thought of a fake one. I need the smell. I need sap on my hands or else it’s not Christmas.   If this tree sucks, you can bet that ol’ L.L. is going to hear about it and my $75 will be promptly returned to my bank account.  Lastly, we are going out of town for Christmas this year. Which usually means we take the tree down before we leave to avoid fire hazards and pet damage while we are away. So if I am going to take it down on December 22 anyway, I want to put it up as soon as possible to get as much Christmas delight out of it as possible. I learned the hard way last year that not decorating for Christmas is one of the most horribly depressing things in the world. I won’t ever make that mistake again.  Yes, it’s a hassle, but it’s always worth it.

So tell me, is anyone else as nuts as I am? Who’s been shopping already? I want to hear holiday plans!

A- I have 20 posts to catch up of yours…SLOW YOUR ROLL!!! Holy crap I am behind

B- I am giving you my address and you can overnight that little cheesecake doodad anytime okay! I think that would make me and baby happy as a puppy with two peters.

C- You made my stomach lurch at the thought of Christmas…I am so far removed from that holiday and the crazy amount of money we would magically need to have…but I am down with decorating

D- You are still one of my favorite bloggers to read, thanks for the laughs.

Donna Donna. Come to my house. I’ll pay you. You can decorate while I’m away. And bake me some stuff.

    Just kidding. Kind of.

Don’t slow down the roll! I love the frequent updates. And thanks for turning me on to Kelly over at Filtering Life. (Hi Kelly!)

Lastly, G’s family has an unspoken tradition (I think it’s really more like a lazy habit). It’s a standoff until the last minute for who will host Thanksgiving. He and his five sibilngs wait until his mother volunteers then you hear, “No Mom. I’ll do it.” Last year it landed on me. (Not so much this year since I moved out in August!)

Nope - not ready by any means. Have to get through Thanksgiving, HUSband’s b-day, FIL’s b-day and by then (11 December) will start freaking out that we only have 2 weeks left.

No real tree in our house thanks to my allergies. And no ornaments below 4 or 5 feet thanks to the kitty. It looks a bit silly with only 2 feet of ornaments, so we may leave them all off.

Two words for you: bite me.

& I say that with love.

Girl, we are trying our best to wait at least another week, then - up the decorations will go! I leave for the US on Thanksgiving weekend, and M leaves on Dec 14th, so we figure we need to decorate soon so that we have plenty of time to enjoy it before we leave for the holidays. We will listen to Christmas music as we drink hot chocolate and decorate the tree, and pretend that it’s not 90 degrees outside.

So you are not alone. We shall be decorating soon, soon, soon!

CHRISTMAS??? I just bought halloween costumes the other day, and you know I’m the christmasiest gal around, but there’s no way I’ll get to Christmas decorating this year until I have many handbags sewn and delivered. Just thinking about it makes my head explode. Good for you though!

And yes, LL did open in South Windsor. Just a few months ago, so no, you did not miss it–it’s brand new. the store is no big shakes though, I’m only 1/2 an hour and I still do most of my shopping via catalog. They have most of the basics, but once you’ve been up to Freeport to the big store, the little ones are sort of…meh. okay.

HowEVer, we’ve just had a glut of retailers come to CT: Cabela’s, REI and Crate and Barrel have all opened in the last few weeks. Come to Connecticut! Shop till your fingers cramp from holding handle bags! If you are One Who Hunts or Fishes(which I am not) Cabela’s is supposed to be great. We’re going to go soon though, seems like a fun destination to bring the kids to. Except for the whole “Dead Animal Heads on the Wall” thing. We’re not really into that.

We’re going to go try and cut our own tree this year to try and avoid the dead tree before you buy it thing…but I am trying to get everything else bought online before Thanksgiving. I’m about 1/2 way there…
