Anyone Else Think This is Wrong?

February 21st, 2008

Does it annoy anyone else that when they show a woman getting an ultrasound on TV or in movies,  the woman is always getting an external ultrasound way earlier in the pregnancy than is possible in real life? No one on TV gets a date with the dildo-cam. And they always “hear” the heartbeat through the ultrasound machine. Are there some sort of ultrasound machines out there with a built-in doppler that I am not aware of? Last I checked, an ultrasound was purely a visual medium.

Those things are almost as annoying as when they show women who go to the doctor, discover they are pregnant, and immediately see the baby AND the gender at a gestational age of eight weeks or less.  Don’t they know that women who have had babies watch TV and we call bullshit on this stuff?

Yeah, I watch and sometimes I’m like “Hey - they need to stick it IN to see that!!” But every U/S I’ve had, they do have sound and can hear the heartbeat and arterial flow. I just don’t think they turn it on a lot.

HA Ha…yes very wrong! I guess I never thought about it, but now that you mention it, that is so true. Those brillant TV doctors.

I love the ones that say they could feel the baby move at 12 weeks (and I’ve seen even sooner).

On the other hand, what woman besides those who have suffered early losses or are going through infertility get an ultrasound before 9,10,12 weeks? So I guess their first one could be abdominal…ok, so I’m tyring to play devil’s advocate.

AndreAnna has corrected me! I never knew that such technology existed. Although in my defense I had ultrasounds at three different doctors and not a one of ‘em let me hear anything.

And DD brings up a good point. I thought all pregos got an initial ultrasound to see the heartbeat and determine the number of buns in the oven. I had the first at my REI’s office before he booted me to the regular OB and then she did one as part of my very first OB visit, but maybe she only did that since she knew I’d had IUI. Hmmmm….interesting things to ponder.

I had my first u/s at 12 weeks exactly and it was still internal and we had no sound. We saw the heart beating, but didn’t get to hear it until 15 weeks. On the tv issue, having an internal u/s isn’t the most pleasant thing, and like all pregnancy tv stuff, they make it look good and nice, not ugly and unglamorous like it can be.

My doctor here in Malaysia did a combo of abdominal and wand of love until the second trimester, and both had sound. They seem to be much more keen to do an u/s at every visit here - it’s pretty standard. In fact, that’s how they confirmed my pregnancy - they didn’t even do a blood test. He also has 4D that he uses at every visit now, which has completely spoiled me.
