Our Little Bookworm

April 19th, 2008

Have I mentioned how much Bridget is obsessed with books? For the past month or so, she can’t be more than a foot from a book of some sort. When she wakes up in the morning, she immediately points to her book shelf and demands “Boo!” That’s pronounced like “book” only without the k at the end, by the way. On the changing table, she continually asks for a book. The challenge is to look through the pile of books on the nightstand to figure out which “boo” it is she wants. Because she knows exactly which one and it’s our job to deliver the goods. It’s absolutely funniest when she’s on the changing table because she’ll take her book and lie back, then cross one ankle over the other knee and flip through the pages.  We have books upstairs, books downstairs, books in Jake’s office, books for the car. She even has a couple bathtub books.

One of my favorite things in the world is when she brings me a book then backs down into my lap for me to read it to her. Whenever she does it, I just want to squeeze her, but I can’t. She doesn’t wait that long. She usually won’t let me get through more than a page or two before she is up and getting another book. Sometimes she’ll close the book and say “buh-bye”, other times she’ll just get up and go without a word. There’s no rhyme or reason to it that I can tell.

But tell me - is it awful of me that some of her books I hate so much that I daily consider throwing them in the trash while she’s sleeping so I never have to read them again?

Yeah, I thought so too.

I “misplace” some of our books on a regular basis. Don’t feel bad - she’s too little to know you’re censoring her library! And we’re a Wii family now, too (as of this morning). My hubby is playing Super Mario Galaxy as I type… but I don’t think it’s as fun as Wii Sports. I’m never going “real” bowling again!

Don’t feel too bad. Out of desperation, I hid “My New Kitten” in the top of the hall closet when my girl was three - just couldn’t take it anymore! When she rediscovered it as we packed to move, she was nine. Her annoyance with Mom dissipated very quickly as she paged through the book, then clutched it to her chest, described her love for it and took it to her room. I haven’t seen it since, and she can read it herself. Everyone’s happy, and or girl has become a perfectly self-assured, happy, sociable (and un-scarred re: books!) twelve year old. And a beuty, might I add! :)
Stash the book, without guilt, even if only for a temporary hiatus. Moms need a little sanity, too.

How wonderful that she loves books so much! I hope my little one does; I already have quite a few for her.

My mom told me recently that after she got home from work each day I’d bring her a stack of at least 10 books to read. She also confessed that she did almost exactly what you want to do: if she got sick of a book she’d hide it for a while (a month or two) and then put it back on the bookshelf. That way she didn’t have to deal with it and it was like a whole new book to me when it came back.

There were a few books that we made “disappear” because they were so awful. However, now that our son is 6, I miss reading time at night. He farts around so much getting ready for bed that it gets too late to read…

We have started going to the library twice a week and we pick up 15 or so books each trip. Freya is so jazzed about having new books to read that she’s completely forgotten about any book she owns. Except “Corduroy.” Nothing in the world can sever her from “Corduroy.”

I already think I’m going to accidentally misplace some books….doh!
