On My Mind

May 6th, 2008

So Saturday at the baby shower, it might have been casually mentioned that I have a touch of OCD. All because when I was making the punch right before the guests arrived, I pulled out fruit juice ice cubes I had made the day before to keep the punch cold without watering it down as the cubes melted.

Now personally, I don’t view this as OCD behavior, nor do I think of it as particularly Martha-Stewart-esque behavior. It’s just a handy entertaining tip for those of us who don’t care for the punch made with sherbet, which tends to keep itself cool, obviously. It’s not like I hand embroidered linen napkins for each guest as a party favor or milled the paper I used for the invitations.

Personally I think that I am about the farthest thing from OCD there is - unless you can say that I obsessively don’t put away my laundry or I have a compulsion for forget to feed the dog. I’m far too lazy to be plagued by any OCD behaviors.

Or do I? Am I really in denial? Are fruit juice ice cubes a sign of mental illness or simply good planning? I’ll also admit to the fact that I made the cubes proportionate with the recipe for the punch. The biggest part was cranberry juice, so I made more cranberry juice cubes than I did orange and pineapple juice cubes. But again, I defensively say that it just makes sense to do it that way so you don’t change the way the punch tastes. It’s not like I did extensive calculations to figure it out or anything.

So tell me, am I treading on dangerous ground or am I simply a good party planner? It’s ok. You can be honest. I can take it. It’s not like your input will stop me from making my fruit juice ice cubes in the future. I’m just curious.

I think you’re a genius! I had never thought of that!

No, I think you just make a good punch. Now if you had shaved each cube down so that they were all equal in size and then added them at approximately timed intervals… that might be a problem.

Can i say you might be a little obsessive about being obsessive? If you think you might be crazy you probably aren’t. I think the ice cubes is very smart and classy and not even in the same league as OCD which would be making tons and tons of ice cubes until each ice cube when melted tasted was a perfect match for the punch.
