It’s Like Rekindling an Old Friendship

May 7th, 2008

In the past month, I’ve read two books by Stephen King. I should say here that I love Stephen King books. Mostly the old stuff but really almost all of it. The Shining and It are probably my two favorites of his. I also am convinced that the reason so many people of my generation don’t like clowns is due in no small part to having read It. I don’t like the Dark Tower series but other than that, I’m a fan. I don’t know why I hadn’t ready anything of his in a while but I just recently picked up Lisey’s Story and Cell at the Half-Price Books that just opened near my house.

I love to read and sadly that’s been one of the “me” time things I’ve given up the most since having Bridget. I just don’t get to go off in a corner or spend a weekend with my nose in a book. No matter what, I usually do read a few pages every night before bed, but the going is slow. And Stephen King books do tend to be a bit long. However, I made it through Lisey’s Story in a little over a week, and Cell in about the same.

Cell really grabbed me from the minute I opened it and I stayed up way too late way too many nights in a row, but I just finished it today. I love when a book gets my heart pounding and I have to remind myself that I’m not actually in the story. It was so good! Scary and amazing but so good. I’m even making Jake read it next, and he’s never read any Stephen King before. I don’t know that he’d like the classics that I love, but I think the subject matter of this one will really strike his fancy.

I’m actually pretty disappointed that I finished it, sort of how I felt when I finished the last Harry Potter. But I have a big stack of to-be-read books on my nightstand awaiting me, so off I go to see what will be next. Probably something light-hearted after that scary one. Maybe some Sweet Potato Queens are just what the doctor ordered.

If it’s the Sweet Potatoe Queens’ First Big Ass Novel? Then yes, it’s what the doctor ordered. I loved that book! I may have to go check out Cell, but probably should wait for a few months when I’m hopefully less sleep deprived and therefore less likely to let the book really get to me. It’s been a long time since I’ve read any Stephen King Books.

I also love Stephen King books (as well as other in that same sort of genre, like Dean Koontz) and I have never been so scared in my life after reading many of his books! I’m partial to Pet Cemetery but my husband loves “It” as well! I have Harry Potter on my to-read pile now going on over two years! This summer, I am determined to get into them! My ten-year old just finished the first one and is anxious to read the rest…

I LOVED “Cell”. Definitely one of his best, and I am a connoiseur (or however you spell that) of SK. When I read that, I was still bringing Freya to work with me, and I’d take her downstairs to the Warehouse a couple of times a day to walk her around in the sling until she’d fall asleep. I would cast my eye over the stacks and stacks of firefighting stuff, and be doing a mental packing list of what to come grab if ever something like “Cell” should occur. It still gives me a shiver.

You didn’t post anything about “Lisey’s Story.” What did you think? Personally, I loathed it. Thought it was completely awful, and a near re-hash of “Rose Madder.” (Which wasn’t very good either, but was somewhat better than “LS”.)

Also? You’re a nut if you don’t like the Dark Tower series. :-P

Oh I’m a huge Stephen King fan. IT terrifies me STILL. I cannot for the life of me step over a damn sewer grate without a shiver! I love his story-telling…I don’t care for the out & out horror as much as the long & winding tales. I think THE STAND is my favorite.

I like SK, too, but mostly the older stuff. I think I’d pick The Stand as my fave. Though I really liked Cujo and The Shining. I haven’t read Lisey yet (but have it) and don’t have Cell. I did read his latest Duma Key and LOVED it. It was like his old stuff again. Try it.

PS - I could live at Half Price Books. Unfortunately we don’t have one here.
