Snakes on a Porch!

August 3rd, 2007

Oh.

my.

god.

Last night, around 11 p.m. I opened the back door to let the dogs out one last time for the night. And there, on the little brick ledge right up against my back door was a snake. A SNAKE! Did you hear me, people? A SNAKE!!!!! Robbie had already walked out oblivious to the reptile on the porch but I stood there squealing and hopping from one foot to the other until I realized that wait! I can close the door! Jake was behind me in the kitchen and just stood there laughing at me. I finally made him open the door to look while I stood far away from the back door, still hopping from one foot to the other, like that would save me from the boa constrictor in the backyard.  He stood there watching it until Robbie came back up and sniffed the snake, who then decided it was high time he took his leave and slithered away.

We live on a creek. The fact that we’ve been here four years and this is the first such encounter we have had is miraculous. But still. What freaks me out is not really what was, but what could have been. Like, this COULD have happened when Jake was out of town and then I’d be freaking out alone. The snake was very small, and COULD have gotten into the house. While Jake was out of town. Ack. That gives me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it.  A dog COULD have dragged it back in to play with. And the list goes on and on and on.

I have chills going up my spine just remembering this.

I hate nature.

We used to get critters, snakes included, when we lived closer to downtown. We, too, lived on a creek, and I can’t tell you the number of times we’ve found things like that. The WORST was one time - we found a 6′ HUGE snake that we had to call the police about. They actually came out to the house and shot it. It was THAT big.

    Yuck.

& why didn’t Jake go kill it so you’d never have to watch it grow into a ginormous snake??

See Donna, Emily called the police too! It’s not just me who reacted that way! ICCKK!

OH MY GOD - i would’ve completely LOST IT. I freak out at the merest glimpse of a snake…panic attack style (which is unfortunate since Steve & I love to camp & hike in the woods…it sucks sometimes….)

I would probably just die if I had a snake on my back porch.

Oh. Ew. I drove over a snake a few weeks ago, and I still haven’t recovered.

there’s a guy on National Geographic channel who goes after snakes like a crazy man. He’ll tramp through India to find pythons and then try to capture them with his hands and a stick, all the while hollering “THAT! IS A BIG! SNAKE!” gleefully, even as some snakes try to crush him in their coils. This is all I could think of as I read this.
