On Sprinkling

July 18th, 2006

As you might remember, our sprinkler system has been installed and is now up and running, showering our lawns in watery goodness, but only on our city-designated watering days, Wednesday and Saturday.

The good news? I have grass growing in places that hasn’t seen grass since we bought the house in July of 2003. Amazing what a little water will do for you.

The bad news? Apparently weeds like water too. I had thought our weed problem was minor. Turns out, the weeds were parched as well. Now they are living la vida loca in my yard.

My parents came over last night. My dad was back in my office and I said, “Go ahead. Open the window. Feast your eyes on my beastly weeds.”He says we need to put down weed killer in the fall, before the grass dies, and that my efforts of killing the weeds this year are useless. File this away in the back of your mind because I’ve damn near killed myself trying to kill the freaking weeds!

yes our near drought conditions here in NE MN have really curbed my weed problem! Yes! I’m the type that doesn’t use chemicals on the lawn and also don’t water (it’s expensive!) so we get what nature provides. We’ve left a couple areas “natural” to see what would happen (non-mowed) and we’re getting lovely daisies, tall grasses and a few blooming thistles which, once you get past the prickly part produces quite lovely purple flowers. I guess mother nature takes care of it when we can’t (or dont’).
