Belated

July 20th, 2008

Yeah, I missed my post from yesterday. I suck. Well, in my defense, I did not stop moving from the time I got up at 7:30 to the time I went to bed at 1 a.m. Gym, helping to clean the garage, grocery shopping, showering and going out to dinner with the family for July birthdays kept me very busy. Then we took horrible advantage of Jake’s sister who was babysitting for us and went to see The Dark Knight. It was good, but I had a headache - don’t mix sake and martinis by the way. And I was tired. I’m probably downplaying how good the movie was. Heath Ledger was incredible. Just incredible. If I had more free time on my hands I might have to go see it again. But the next thing I see will be Mama Mia.

OK, off to run more errands. Getting ready to be gone for four days and leaving the house and our kid in the care of someone else takes a lot of planning.

Sex and the City Movie

June 2nd, 2008

Today, thanks to Jake’s kind offer, I went to see the SATC movie by myself.  I promise I’ll not give any spoilers so feel free to read on even if you haven’t seen it.

Y’all, it was so good. I loved loved loved loved loved loved loved it. Have I mentioned that I loved it? But I also loved the show. My roommate and I were the annoying girls who made Sunday nights an event, complete with drinks, take-out food and HBO. We didn’t answer the phone between 8 and 8:30 on Sunday nights. This was the era before DVRs of course. I watched every single episode and was sad when it ended. So take that into consideration when you read my thoughts on it. I was inclined to love it. If you didn’t like the show, you might not like the movie that much.

It’s way more than a chick flick. It’s the equivalent of a buddy movie for women. Whereas the show was really too short to delve deeply into all the women’s characters and instead sort of turned them into caricatures, the movie, at just a bit over 2 hours, is long enough to really develop them. Charlotte is really shown to be a true mother at heart. Samantha reaches an emotional depth we never saw before. Miranda shows some vulnerability I never expected. And Carrie, well Carrie grows up some. And I adored Jennifer Hudson as Carrie’s PA.

It’s funny, it’s emotional, it’s sad. But most of all, I just loved the devotion these women have for each other. I laughed in spots, I cried in spots. I was entirely enthralled.

Jake said that I should go scope it out and if I liked it enough, we’d go back to see it together. And you can bet your ass I want to see it again. And I think the last time I saw a movie more than once in the theater was 1986 with Top Gun and Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. Yep, I liked this one as much as my twelve year old self loved those two.

Wiggling In My Chair

May 30th, 2008

I’m sitting here all jangly-nerved. You know why? Because the Sex and the City movie opened today and I have not seen it. Nor will I probably see it for a week or two. And I’m really annoyed by this fact.

This is driving me c-r-a-z-y.

Indiana Jones

May 24th, 2008

We saw the new Indiana Jones movie today and it was really fun! I did some quick math in my head and realized that first movie came out when I was seven or eight when the first one came out. So that was um, 26 years ago? Holy crap.I remember playing endless rounds of the Indiana Jones board game I got for my birthday that year when we lived in Houston. Good times.

Anyway, the movie was fun. This is definitely one to see in the theater this summer. You won’t regret it.

Two Movies in One Week!

May 15th, 2008

Wow, that’s so exciting. Sadly I only went today because I was bored and had nothing else to do that wouldn’t require spending a lot of money. I couldn’t hang out too much at the house because the housekeepers were coming and I hate being here when they are.

Tuesday I saw Baby Mama. I love Tina Fey and Amy Poehler so I knew I’d like it at least a little bit. But note to self: seeing a movie about infertility when you are in the throes of baby wanting is not such a great idea. It was cute, but predictable.

Today I saw Made of Honor. Did I mention I was bored and desperate for cheap entertainment? It didn’t suck. Cute Patrick Dempsey in kind of a bad boy role. Again, cute but predictable.

I don’t think either of these are must-sees but if you find yourself needing a decent video rental in a couple of months, you could do much worse than these two.

Iron Man

May 9th, 2008

Yesterday Jake and I sneaked out to the movies while Bridget was at Mother’s Day Out. We saw Iron Man, which Jake had been itching to see. I was not exactly dying to see it, but I’m so glad we went. It was fantastic. Robert Downey Jr. was great, and I can tell you girls that if you had a crush on him in the eighties, you will have a new crush on him now. Most of the movie is really great, but it does have its moments where you’ll have to remind yourself that this is a comic book movie and just kind of go with it.  It was really done just right, though and is a great summer flick.

If you go see it, make sure you stay through the end of the credits. They are long and you’ll want to skeedaddle, but hang in.

Leatherheads

April 13th, 2008

As a continuation of Bridget’s sleepover at my parents’ house last night, today we went to a movie!  Together! On a weekend!

We saw Leatherheads and we really, really liked it. But we enjoy that kind of comedy. I’d say if you liked O Brother, Where Art Thou? you will like this. Very funny.

After the movie went to pick up Bridget from my parents, where we learned that she had said “Thank you PaPa” to my dad. That girl is getting to be so verbal and it’s almost scary.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

April 10th, 2008

Today I sneaked out to a movie after running my errands. I had forgotten how much I love going to the movies. I don’t do this nearly enough. True, the past few months have been a bit crazy and well, sucky but we need to try to do this more. Anyway, when I go by myself, I always make it a point to see something that I know Jake would not want to see. That’s how I ended up at Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day today.  In a word, charming. Nothing surprising really but the costumes, characters and dialog were great.

And all through the movie I kept wondering who the hottie was. I knew he looked familiar but I couldn’t place him. I stayed for the credits and didn’t recognize the name. So I had to do a search when I got home. I was quite surprised to learn that this gorgeous man….

… is the perfectly adorable Pie Maker on Pushing Daisies. I never was too interested in him on that show, although I really like the show (and am sincerely hoping it comes back from the strike). But in this he’s just yum-mee. Although I discovered in my searches that he’s five years younger than I am. When did it happen that the hotties I see in movies and on TV are now younger than me? Jake says it makes me a cougar. I am not pleased about this turn of events.

On a completely unrelated note, I had to laugh out loud today as I was in the car on my way to the movies and I had to swerve on the highway to avoid killing an armadillo that was crossing the highway. I’ve never actually seen an armadillo alive before, much less seen one crossing a road. They are ugly little buggers, that’s for sure. Not that I would intentionally kill any animal, but I can see why no one really goes out of their way to avoid tagging these guys. Ick.

3-D Hottie Goodness

February 5th, 2008

Thanks to Jake’s wonderful sister, we were able to nip out to see the U2 3D movie. I have seen 3D movies before but nothing as good as this. It was like floating over the stage but so close that I could reach down and tousle Larry Mullen Jr.’s hair, still sporting that unfortunate slicked-back mullet. I got to see The Edge’s (surprisingly) bulging biceps. I confirmed that Adam Clayton looks like a grandpa, but in a sexy way. And Bono…. wow. Bono.

Jake said a friend of his told him that seeing the movie was better than a concert and I guess in a way it was because of all the close up details we got to see. It was a movie of a show I’ve already seen though, so that took some of the oomph out of it. And being in a movie theater, we couldn’t behave like we were at a concert. There was no singing along with the rest of the audience on screen, no jumping up and down screaming and clapping with them. But I’ll tell you, it sure made me want to go to another U2 show post haste.

Call the Press!

January 31st, 2008

I saw two movies this week.

I haven’t seen two movies in one week since my pregnancy. Jake and I LOVE going to the movies and used to see one almost every weekend, sometimes more if there were a few things out we were dying to see. But that all ended when Bridget was born. Damn babies are so selfish.

Thanks to generous babysitting by Jake’s sister and my parents, plus Mother’s Day Out, we are getting our movie fixes a bit more regularly than we had been.

This week, I went alone to see Sweeney Todd, which I really liked. I liked it more than the stage play. Now I know that’s odd to say but I think we saw a low-rent version on the stage. The sets were bare bones and there was no orchestra - every cast member played an instrument on stage. It was good but odd. The movie had so much more depth and the use of makeup was really good. Normally you don’t notice such things in a film, but this was really good. I’m not a huge fan of Tim Burton’s in general but I really liked this. I’m glad I went alone, though because Jake would have hated it. All the singing…. ewww… But how can you go wrong with singing about murder and cannibalism?

Today, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with myself when Bridget was at MDO. I try to use it as “me” time but there was nothing I really wanted to do. Pay no attention to the fact that I still have a formal living room full of Christmas decorations well over a month past Christmas. Jake decided he could squeeze in a flick so what the hell? Those decorations aren’t in anybody’s way, now are they? We wanted to see another movie more but the times just didn’t work out for us, so we ended up at Michael Clayton. This is a movie I had really no interest in when it was first released. But I’d been hearing more and more good things about it, plus all the Oscar buzz has piqued my interest. Once upon a time, I made it my business to see every film nominated for Best Picture. Well, you can see how I’ve one on that over the past year. Anyway, Michael Clayton did not disappoint. It was so good! I completely agree with all of its Oscar nominations.

Sadly the one movie we are D-Y-I-N-G to see, the new U2 movie, just isn’t happening for us. It’s only at the IMAX theaters and at wonky times, so it’ll never work for a MDO day movie. And I’ve been working so much on Saturdays and Sundays that it’s tough. I think I’m just going to have to take one for the team and send Jake alone to this one. I really want to go but he’ll be crushed if he misses it.

And now for further excitement - the Lost premier tonight. C’mon Lost! Don’t let me down!
